The recent launch of Awarapan 2 has pulled audiences back into the gritty, emotional landscape of Shivam Pandit. While Emraan Hashmi's return as the tormented hero steals the spotlight, the film also introduces some powerful female characters brought to life by two of India's most captivating actresses: Disha Patani and Shabana Azmi. They’re not just there to support; they play crucial roles that propel the new narrative forward.

Disha Patani as Zara: The Dazzling Beacon of Hope

Disha Patani takes on the role of Zara, a character hailed as the "only ray of light" in the film's dark and perilous world. This marks a significant departure from the tragic Aaliyah from the first installment. Producer and co-writer Vishesh Bhatt has emphasized that Zara is a "very modern character, a contemporary figure in another country." He pointed out, "This character is not Shriya Saran. There’s a clear contrast here."

Zara is the daughter of a crime lord, initially entrenched in the very underworld that Shivam is striving to dismantle. Her journey intertwines with Shivam's, leading her to ultimately turn against her own faction. While critics have noted that the film primarily showcases Hashmi, Patani's performance has sparked considerable excitement. She’s been described as embodying "every bit the glamorous action heroine." Her role demands her to be physically engaged in the action scenes, hinting at a shift towards more dynamic roles for her.

Shabana Azmi as Nafisa: A Legendary Villain

In a thrilling twist, the iconic Shabana Azmi takes on the role of Nafisa, a formidable figure in the criminal underworld. This marks a rare venture into a fully negative character for the esteemed actress, showcasing a bold shift from her typical roles. Nafisa stands out as a key antagonist, someone who commands fear in the film's universe. Her presence brings a significant weight to the story, setting her against Hashmi's Shivam and Puran Gabbi's Zorawar. While some critics have pointed out that the writing doesn't always delve deeply into her character's complexities as a mafia leader, her role is undeniably a major highlight of the film.

A Thoughtful Recasting

The choice to cast Disha Patani as the new female lead was a strategic move aimed at revitalizing the franchise. Although Shriya Saran, who portrayed the heart-wrenching Aaliyah in the original 2007 film, makes a brief cameo, the sequel needed a fresh dynamic for Shivam. Producer Vishesh Bhatt noted, "I don’t think they’ve been seen together on screen," and praised Disha's "charming face and personality" as the perfect match for this modern role.
