This photoshoot-which was staged at the absolutely beautiful South Seas Resort, on Captiva Island, Florida-shows another Cunningham that most fans of her never get to see while on the basketball court; not a fierce competitor staring down an opponent, but a glowing woman confidently posing in the sun on white sandy beaches.
A Bucket List Moment Come True
For Cunningham, it wasn't just a shoot. It was a dream fulfilled. "It was so empowering and just so fun but being able to check that off my list," Cunningham told Sports Illustrated. "That has been a huge bucket list goal and now I just feel so good about myself" .
It was a much more audacious set of images that truly sent the social networks reeling. A series of more artistic, topless images showed Cunningham strategically draped and posed against a dynamic backdrop of the sea and sand, conveying power and a fierce self-acceptance.
The "Girly Side" of a WNBA Enforcer
"I'm spicy, but you know I'm just want to kind of girlify it, girl aspect of sport, and that is really what I'm about," Cunningham said to Sporting News. "I just want to be spicy with my clothing choices, cozy too sometimes... But just something that I want to feel like is like something cool that I can wear."
It is this mix of killer competitor and style icon that is so captivating. From bodying an opponent to gracing the pages of one of the world's most popular swimsuits.
The Internet Reacts
As soon as Cunningham posted pictures of her to Instagram along with the caption, “year 1 with @si_swimsuit AHHHH,” everyone online lost it.
Many of the Indiana Fever team members were the first ones to send her love. Lexie Hull left the comment, “Oh em geeeeeeee,” which perfectly encapsulated fans' reactions, while Nelly Korda simply left a "Okkkkk ".
More Than Just a Pretty Face
Cunningham's appearance comes on the heels of what many believe to be the biggest rise the WNBA has seen in history. Increased viewership and major sponsorship deals alongside rising cultural relevance have caused athletes like Cunningham to use the platform given to them to grow beyond the court.
Back to Business
Cunningham has, of course, not forgotten that her work supports her family. The Fever just started their 2026 season, and Cunningham is gradually rejoining the team after being sidelined for the remainder of the 2025 season with a knee injury. In the Fever's first game against the Dallas Wings, Cunningham played 26 minutes, and though her three-point, four-rebound, three-assist performance was humble in terms of statistics, Coach Stephanie White stressed that they need to get Cunningham involved more in the offense.
"We've got to find her more though," White said. "You know, she's a knockdown three-point shooter. I thought we missed her a lot."
It will be interesting to see if Cunningham can bring the same energy she shows in her personal brand to the court with their next matchup against the Los Angeles Sparks.
The Takeaway
Sophie Cunningham's entry into Sports Illustrated Swimsuit demonstrates her developing legacy. She is an example that today's athletes are able to be world-class competitors and women, while not having to surrender their femininity or personal flair. She is a killer shooter, style guru, a good teammate, and now she is a SI Swimsuit model."It was so much fun," Cunningham reported about the experience. "They just have this thing about all women and they just bring all of them together, it was like frickin' amazing. It was so amazing".
