As NBC kicks off the milestone 20th season of America’s Got Talent, the show is revisiting its roots. And who better to bring back than Jessica Sanchez, the little powerhouse from Season 1 who captured hearts with her incredible voice?
This time around, Jessica isn’t just returning as a singer. She’s stepping back onto the stage as a woman with a story, a journey, and a fresh start.
From a Spark at 9 to a Flame at 29
“I’ve been singing since I was a little girl,” Jessica shared in her emotional video package. “But me trying out for America’s Got Talent, that was a whole different world.”
At just 9 years old, Jessica made it to the semifinals of AGT’s first season in 2006. Though she didn’t win, the experience planted a seed. “Getting eliminated was devastating, but it really did help me realize I want to sing. AGT was the beginning of that fire spark inside of me.”
But as she continued growing in the music industry, the pressure of expectations started to weigh her down. “I was so swayed by what everyone wanted me to be, who they wanted me to be,” she admitted to the judges during her audition. “Maybe it took me 20 years, but I know exactly who I am. I know exactly what I want. I am excited to be back.”
And this time, Jessica didn’t come alone — she brought something even more precious than her music: she revealed she’s pregnant with her first child.
What AGT Didn’t Tell You: The American Idol Chapter
What a lot of AGT fans might not know is that Jessica has always kept her passion for singing alive. Back in 2012, she tried out for Season 11 of American Idol, where she quickly won over the audience and became a fan favorite. Even though she was eliminated in the Top 7, the judges recognized her incredible talent and used their one and only "Judges' Save" of the season to keep her in the running.Jessica made it all the way to the finale, ultimately finishing as the runner-up to Phillip Phillips. Even though she didn’t take home the crown, her performances — like her stunning versions of Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” and Beyoncé’s “Sweet Dreams” — were celebrated as some of the most remarkable in the show’s history.
After her time on Idol, Jessica released an album, appeared on Glee, and even had the honor of singing for President Obama. But beyond the glitz and glamour, she was on a personal journey, figuring out who she wanted to be — not just as an artist, but also as a woman and now, as a mother.
A Show-Stopping Comeback Performance
Back on the AGT stage, Jessica was a vision of confidence and grace. With a live band backing her up, she delivered an unforgettable performance of Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things” — and absolutely rocked the house. The judges were left in awe.
Simon Cowell, who had watched her grow from a child on AGT to a contestant on Idol, couldn’t contain his excitement — especially when he found out she was expecting. “Oh, my God. Congratulations! This is incredible,” he said, clearly moved. “Let me tell you, this is the best thing that can ever happen in your life. Ever. Ever. Ever. Ever. Ever. Ever. Ever.”
Howie Mandel was impressed with her unique take on the song: “Wow! I have to say, 20 years is a long time, but it was definitely worth the wait. I love that song, and you made it your own — you really blew the roof off the place.”
Mel B was almost at a loss for words: “You’ve got the voice of a bloody angel. It’s beautiful. I’m just speechless.”
But it was Sofía Vergara who took action. Overwhelmed by the significance of the moment — the 20th season, Jessica’s return after two decades, and her pregnancy — she hit the Golden Buzzer, sending Jessica straight to the Live Shows.
“I think something truly special happened on this stage with you,” Sofía said. “It’s amazing that we’re in the 20th season of AGT, you’re back after 20 years, you’re pregnant, you’re stunning, and you’re so ready for this.”
Backstage and Beyond
Backstage, Sofía was dabbing at her tears. “It was so emotional seeing her over there, saying, ‘I’m pregnant, and I was here 20 years ago.’ This moment is truly special — she absolutely deserves it.”Simon chimed in: “To really succeed, you need genuine determination and talent. All those years of wanting something so badly and just going for it — it was incredibly powerful.”
Jessica Sanchez’s return isn’t just about nostalgia. It’s a brilliant showcase of growth, resilience, and embracing your own story. After two decades, she’s back not to chase a dream — but to fully inhabit it.
